Expressive E Osmose 61 CE

The Osmose CE takes a bit of getting used to coming from a traditional keyboard - I am still accidentally triggering the per-key pitch bend on occasion, but once you start getting the hang of it there is no going back. An incredibly expressive instrument when paired with Ableton Live and the bundled ctrl-e soft synth - just make sure your DAW is supported as a lot of the integration with ctrl-e only works properly with a supported DAW. This is an inspirational keyboard and I highly recommend it to anyone looking to explore MPE soft synths.

Osmose n'est pas juste un nom, c'est une invitation à une relation fusionnelle avec le clavier qui devient le médium de notre créativité, de notre sensibilité, de nos émotions, de nos désirs, un prolongement de nous même.
C'est ce que j'ai ressenti quand j'ai posé mes doigts pourtant peu experts sur les touches et qu'une palette d'indéfinies possibilités a pris corps. Les sons ont envahi l'espace dans des modulations improbables mais prometteuses et là..! Grand sourire et grand frisson.
A vrai dire les détails techniques sont assez loin de mes préoccupations et ce que je peux en dire se résume à ceci:
Belle apparence même si la couleur ne fait pas l'unanimité.
Impression de qualité dans la construction.
Le clavier surprend bien sûr mais dans le bon sens. On comprend qu'il faudra l'apprivoiser mais le toucher est déjà très agréable avec les réglages de base et peut être paramétré facilement selon nos préférences.
La galère, pour le geek que je ne suis pas, fut l'installation et l'intégration à Logic qui m'a pris quelques heures (firmware compliqué à installer avec des bugs) et un agacement certain, d'autant que le manuel d'installation est en anglais exclusivement, ce qui me chagrine venant d'une boite française que dis-je, Marseillaise!
Après cet écueil qui n'en sera pas un pour la plupart, tout fonctionne parfaitement et on contrôle facilement les différentes fonctions du logiciel avec ctrl-e et les quelques potards disponibles.
Pour ce qui concerne les plugins, banque de sons assez généreuse mais plutôt version "Lite avec achats intégrés" qui nous incite à quelques dépenses supplémentaires.
Ce sont là des points de détails qu'on oublie très vite dès qu'on s'installe devant l'osmose et qu'on découvre son potentiel.
Rien de révolutionnaire dans ce que je dis, les ingés son seront déçus, juste l'expression d'un coup de cœur.. et l'expérience d'un frisson que je vous souhaite de vivre.

At heart, I am a classical musician and composer (flute, guitar, piano, oboe), but have recently started exploring the world of electronic music, presets, a new DAW and MIDI controllers. I previously bought AKAI's EWI 5000 (to be able to practise woodwind pieces at home) and the new guitar from Aeroband (to play with headphones) and bought a better version of Bigwig so that I could access micro-pitch scales.

A new MIDI keyboard was the next logical step and after much research, I opted for the Expressive E Osmose CE 61. I am blown away by this instrument! The ability to bend notes, add vibrato to each note expressively through MPE, arpeggiate at will, add portamento, etc. make for an exciting playing experience. The free software, ctrl-e, contains hundreds of instrument sounds, many of which are set up for MPE use. As a beginner, I already have a highly adaptive and feature-full instrument at my fingertips, even though I haven't yet started to create/edit my own unique sounds.

After a little bit of initial difficulty in the setup - the instructions are good, but not foolproof - I now have the Osmose CE integrated with the software and connected to my DAW. The instrument's onboard screen and controllers mean that I can set many parameters without taking my hands away from the instrument's keyboard.

Are there any drawbacks? I am a little humbled by how much there is yet to learn, and I need to adapt my playing technique to meet the huge opportunities that the Osmose CE key actions provide. I am not finding the LCD screen or the controllers to be intuitive to use as yet, but again, I am just a beginner.

What is clear is that the Osmose CE is a fantastically exciting new instrument, packed with features, with excellent software, and DAW integration.
