Zoom Am7

Finally a good quality mic for Android phone at very reasonable price. Perfect for for musician (at any level) for making acoustic demos or video auditions. The quality of the sound is much higher than you expect with this pricetag.
Pros - expected to live longer than your phone (they tend to fall on the floor every second day...) and therefore can be used also later with any smartphone with usb-c connection; Using smartphone camera, the overall result (audio and video) is way better than standalone devices with poor cameras (for example Q8); Lightweight and small, literally fits into your pocket.
Cons - not so many so far, but could use an alternative power supply when your phone starts to go low on battery. You cannot charge and record at the same time.
I made a comparison recording (acoustic flute, recorded at the same time, one take) including: 1) Am7 connected to reasonable-priced Huawei smartphone, Zoom Q8 and iPhone 12 (without external mic). Results (best to worst): Video - iPhone, Am7, Q8; Sound - Am7, Q8, iPhone.
Would deffinitely buy again when lost :)

I trust Zoom, it is my go-to manufacturer for affordable, versatile, and decent equipment. This one is my last acquisition, it's super lightweight, and, matched with a smartphone, it fits one of the field-recordists' moto, "the best recorder is the one you can always have with you".
Sadly, when I plugged my headphones for monitoring, the app gave me the message "feature not available". Dudes, monitoring is not a "feature", it's basic functionality of a field recorder. Imagine a camera without a viewfinder/LCD screen: you don't know what you're looking at (or listening to, recording), and that's not something that the gain LEDs can compensate or help you with.
After some follow-up inquiry I found a list of compatible android OS's (super outdated, my two years old phone has succeeded the ones listed) on zoom's website.
So, I would suggest any prospecting buyers to check this list, or avoid buying the gadget in the first place. Unless zoom corp puts some effort to keep things up to date. A software update would be very much appreciated, and could turn this negative rating into a very positive one, on account of the aforementioned qualities and its price.
