Phil Jones Double Four Plus BG-80 RD

I was looking for a lightweight combo amp through which to play my double bass, fitted with a Realist Copper Head pickup, and read some good reviews of this amp (albeit from bass guitarists). It certainly is very lightweight and portable (it fits really well in an Accu-Case AC-115 Soft Bag). I was impressed by the claims made about the very small speakers and the power (90 watts, apparently). However the reality for me was intense disappointment - using the amp without a pre-amp resulted in a lot of distortion at not very high audible volume. With a pre-amp (Fishman Platinum Stage) I could get some distortion-free sound but the volume remained low.
I thought this amp would be a more portable and more powerful alternative to the Harley Benton AC60 pro - it is lighter but that's it. This amp is also extremely expensive for what it is. I thought that at that price I'd be getting quality equipment that fits my needs but it doesn't. As I'm playing an acoustic double bass, I don't need an amp to practise alone. I need an amp to practise with a small combo and this doesn't really add much to the acoustic sound of the instrument in terms of volume before it distorts.
I don't know how this works with a bass guitar (for which it was designed) so only take my comments onboard if you're looking for an amp for a double bass.

Als der erste Double Four BG-75 auf den Markt kam, musste ich ihn unbedingt haben. Superklein, supertransportabel - und doch so laut, dass es für kleine Gigs mit einer akustischen Folk-Band reichte. Und soundmässig erstaunlich klar und transparent.
Sieben Jahre war mir der BG-75 ein treuer Begleiter. Dann kam der BG-80 auf den Markt und ich dachte mir: Ich bestelle ihn mal, aber behalten tue ich ihn nur, wenn er deutlich besser ist als mein BG-75. Und jawohl, er ist deutlich besser!
Der BG-80 geht um einiges tiefer als das alte Modell mit den Speakern ohne Alu-Schutzkappe), und er tönt nochmals etwas klarer und weniger verfärbt. Und er hat (wie auch die aktuelleren Modelle des BG-75) kein externes Netzteil mehr. Einziger Nachteil: Der Wirkungsgrad ist durch die neuen verwendeten Lautsprecher schlechter geworden. Was also an Mehrleistung (90 statt 70 Watt) geboten wird, ist auch dringend nötig, um auf gleiche Lautstärke wie das alte Modell zu kommen.
Aber sonst? Der eingebaute Bluetooth-Empfänger ist praktisch und macht das Üben leichter. Und die Möglichkeit, einen externen Akku via USB-Stecker zu verbinden, ist ebenfalls toll. Habe soeben ein Übungswochenende lang mit einem kleinen 20'000 mAh-Akku gespielt und hatte nach sechs oder sieben Stunden noch immer 50% Ladung. Der verbaute Verstärker ist also nach wie vor supereffizient, und für die nächsten sieben Jahre bin ich mit dem BG-80 bestimmt so glücklich wie mit dem Vorgängermodell :-)
P.S. Statt auf die teure und noch nicht lieferbare Tasche von Phil Jones zu warten, kann ich den günstigen Soft Bag von Accu-Case AC-115 empfehlen: Da passt der Verstärker wunderbar rein.
