wrong item shipped: flaccid rubber mute missing Ultra USA inscriptions
margot, from belgium 13.01.2019
The Ultra USA muter is a good product, since I tested my teachers' piece and was very sattisfied with it. Unfortunately, Thomann shipped another muter than the one displayed on the site, which is of a poor quality: a flaccid rubber piece that misses the ULTRA USA inscriptions on the back as displayed on the website. It has hardly any mute-capacity, so I had to send it back. This has been a dissapointing experience.
I got this in order to use it with a 5-string electric cello so I did use a knife to carve one end open. This didn't seem to affect the sound, so the review is probably still relevant.
It's a decent basic rubber mute. It doesn't dampen the sound as much as wood or metal does but it changes the sound in similar fashion (although each material does sound slightly different). So if you are considering getting a mute in order to be able to practice at night, this might not be the best one for you. On the other hand if you only want to achieve the muted sound, it's well worth considering. It is easier to install and take off than wood or metal ones and doesn't make dents in the bridge.
This is a serious piece of dampening kit - as in it really muffles the sound to allow you to practice late at night! Seems to be a nice snug fit over my bridge and holds it shape well. Looks like a cheap piece of kit but invaluable!
The mute fits easily on the cello bridge and blocks wide range of frequencies with variable degree of success. Works fine when practice room acoustics are too loud or when there is a need for practice in a hotel or shared apartment. But the mute is not massive enough to provide complete "stealth" or "night practice" possibilities.
