Best upgrade I've made
I've tried a lot of pickups over the years, but the Lollar Novel 90 set completely transformed my guitar. They deliver everything I love about a great P-90: clarity, punch, dynamic response, and a rich midrange, while fitting perfectly into a humbucker route.
The bridge pickup has plenty of bite and cuts through a mix without ever sounding harsh. Chords stay articulate even with heavy fuzz, and single notes have a thick, vocal quality. The neck pickup is warm and full but never muddy, making clean tones, overdrive, and fuzz equally inspiring.
What impressed me most is how responsive they are to picking dynamics and the guitar's volume control. Rolling back the volume cleans up beautifully, while digging in brings out an aggressive growl that feels incredibly alive.
I mainly play stoner rock, classic rock, and blues, and these pickups excel in every situation. Whether I'm running into a clean amp, overdrive, or massive fuzz, they always retain definition and character.
If you're looking for authentic P-90 tone without modifying your guitar for soapbar pickups, I can't recommend the Lollar Novel 90 enough. They're expensive—but absolutely worth every cent.
