Good for awkward microphone angles.
The ball joint is a rare bird; we normally can make do with a normal mic clamp and the ability of microphone stands and their booms to rotate. But, when the microphone itself has the stand thread in its body, and there is no swivel, this is a life saver. Bought it to put a Sennheiser MD407HN in front of a guitar cab. There, the stand thread is oriented such that the diaphragm is fixed at 90° angle to the length axis of the thread. This is not always a desirable position and therefore the ball joint is just the ticket.
