Harley Benton DB02-SB Electric Double Bass

Having owned the previous EUB500 model, I can say that this is much better sounding and more comfortable to play.

The neck is on the thicker side, but not uncomfortably. Fingerboard is very nice and feels high quality.

The neck-body angle is very shallow compared to an acoustic double bass, so it takes a few days to get used to it.

The body bracket attacment is useful, stable enough for slapping.

Sound and preamp is also nice, no hiss from the main output.

General build quality seems good, but the endpin rattles inside the body (solved by pushing some cardboard alongside it from the back cavity). The small screws used on cavity covers are very soft, they have stripped and became unusable after one dissassembly.

The one I got seems to have a slight crack near the neck joint where the wood is thinner, but it is stable without problems.

It is lightweight and balancing isn't bad. The endpin could have been thicker to make it feel less wobbly.

I've played bass for 30+ years, and have always wanted to own an upright. I've played them off and on, but never had one of my own. I just don't have the space for a full-size acoustic one. The Harley Benton EUB is the second cheapest one on I've found the market. The only cheaper one is made by Krappy Guitars. That's the actual name of the luthier.

The Good? This bass feels really nice in the hands and looks great. The headphone jack and mp3 in are nice added features. The headphones are particularly nice when I've gigged with the bass; I can monitor my playing whether or not I can hear the instrument in the house. Included gig bag and bow are an extra benefit. The dots on the neck have made it easy to transition to this bass with good intonation.

The Less Good? The "tone knob" (aka SubBass) doesn't effect the sound as much as I would like; would like more tone options. The included strings are steel; the amplified instrument sounds more like a fretless bass guitar than an upright. I've replaced them with some faux gut strings which sound and feel better to me… but no one is going to mistake this for an acoustic instrument. The quality of the bow and extender peg are a bit questionable. They've worked so far for me, but feel like they could collapse at any moment.

I've been playing this instrument regularly for about four months now and am very happy with it. I haven't been able compare it with the $3000+ EUBs out there and wonder how much better an instrument would be for nearly 10x the cost.

Tras tener un Palatino muy similar hace unos años que acabé vendiendo, estaba buscando otro contrabajo eléctrico de similares características. Este cumple su función a la perfección en cuanto a sonido y calidad de construcción. No lo he probado con arco, ya que desconozco esta técnica, pero tocado a pizzicato (deditos de toda la vida) tiene un sonido equilibrado y muy similar a un contrabajo acústico amplificado con pastilla piezo.
Viene de fábrica con unas cuerdas decentes, y regulado para empezar a tocar.
Los puntos de referencia en el lado del mástil parecen hechos con rotulador blanco, es lo que muchos contrabajistas principiantes hacen, por lo que hasta ahí es normal, es una ayuda para empezar con las posiciones de mano, y eso aporta la flexibilidad de poder borrarlos (usando un paño ligeramente húmedo), reajustar su posición o añadir nosotros mismos los puntos que necesitemos.
El diseño es bonito, algo anguloso para mi gusto, prefería las líneas curvas del Palatino, al tener el cuerpo más delgado gana mucho en ligereza, que siempre se agradece. En general tiene una estética aceptable, y un acabado de muy buena calidad.
Venía ajustado de manera similar a un contrabajo acústico, con la acción bastante alta, pero esto se puede ajustar fácilmente a mano mediante las ruedecitas del puente, ya que para músicos que vengan del bajo y no tengan una técnica de contrabajo tradicional resultará una altura excesiva.

Pros:
-Construcción y acabados
-Cuerdas decentes
-Sonido bastante respetable
-Ajustado de fábrica
-Relativamente ligero
-incluye arco y funda

Contras:
-mástil quizá excesivamente grueso
-la pica aguanta bien aunque parece algo frágil
-el diseño del cuerpo no es especialmente elegante
-El previo se activa con el jack, estaría bien que tuviera un pequeño interruptor on/off

Me parece un instrumento ideal tanto para contrabajistas que quieran un instrumento para directo de precio contenido, manejable y fácil de transportar, como para bajistas que sientan curiosidad y quieran aprender a tocar el contrabajo, que en el fondo es muy muy diferente de un bajo, en sonido y técnica.

Je suis contrebassiste professionnel et j'ai eu l’occasion de jouer sur beaucoup d’instrument.
J'ai commandé cette contrebasse pour pouvoir voyager facilement.
L’emporter en vacance et pouvoir jouer sans faire de bruit. Et bien j’ai été vraiment agréablement surpris.
Pour commencer par les points négatif:
-L'accastillage est à remplacer.La pique est molle comme du caoutchouc, l’espèce de pièce qui sert de fausse éclisse ne vaut rien et est très désagréable.

Les bonnes surprise :
Instrument très agréable à jouer dès la première prise en main.
Le diapason est bon mais l'espacement des cordes est plus petit .
Les corde d origine sonnent pas mal aux doigt. l'archet pas du tout.
L'archet qui est donné avec est un gadget vous vous en doutez.
Le son du petit préampli est pas mal du tout. Je m attendait à un son de carton style stagg, et bien pas du tout.
Le réglage d'origine (touche, chevalet, sillet) était pas mal sur la mienne. Le chevalet réglable est super efficace.

personnellement j’ai changé la pique et j'ai refait une pièce en bois pour la fausse éclisse. Changé les cordes .

Évidement ce n'est pas une contrebasse de concert et évidement ça n'a rien avoir avec un instrument de luthier.
Mais si vous êtes un peu bricoleur et que vous cherchez un instrument facile a transporter, qui vous permet de travailler sans déranger personne et VRAIMENT pas chère, je vous assure que vous ne serrez pas déçu
