DSM & Humboldt Simplifier MKII

After a lot of though, I purchased my first amp sim/preamp in a very long time. I have used a lot of these boxes over the years, like Pod & Vox toneLab. I now record primarily in a DAW, so I have been using software like Amp Room for the past few years.

I have never honestly been happy with the results of software/sims. So I took the leap in thinking that someone had eventually figured out how to make something far more inspiring/real sounding from analog hardware and I was correct :)

I have gigged for a lot of years in original and cover bands, recorded in some nice/dodgy studios using amps like Vox, Fender twin, Marshall and I understand that a real amp provides the harmonics you feel when you play though its valves. For me, playing though the Simplifier feels like playing through an actual amp. It just feels and inspires more than everything I have tried up to this point.

You switch from one amp to another and you have to work to make it sound good. You really need to adjust everything after switching and that is the joy in finding the sound that fits in the mix or makes you want to mess around for another hour.

It’s just what you would do when changing amps in reality. Driving the power amp tubes as you balance the pre amp gain to make it harmonically rich is fantastic and most importantly, actual fun to work with. I have missed this work while using software and Vox ToneLab. The reverb is beautiful with the a gentle modulation that makes clean sounds smooth and playable and never overpowers the sound of the guitar (I used 4 different types and they all responded great).

Like real amps: Fender proves the most difficult to make it really sing, while Vox and Marshall are far more simple (once driven by the power amp) but that’s a kind of reality which is really nice :)

My only gripe is that I wish it was much bigger for the desktop and comes with no power supply so I removed one star :)

En terme de design et fabrication le Simplifier mkII est incroyable: extrêmement petit et léger, avec pourtant un sacré nombre d'entrées et sortie jack et XLR ! Mais il n'imite pas vraiment complètement les amplis à lampes.

Les branchements d'abord:

Le fait qu'il y ait une DI stéréo intégrée est super, c'est bien mieux pensé que les simulateurs numériques UAFX qui n'ont qu'une sortie jack stereo. Le Simplifier n'a qu'une entrée mono, mais pour les effets stereo on peut utiliser la une boucle d'effet avec retour stéréo, qui seront alors après le gain cependant.
Pour pouvoir se brancher sur un ampli sur scène et l'utiliser soit comme second son soit comme "retour", il y a deux sorties jack avec soit le signal dry soit le signal sans la simulation de cabinet ... super pratique pour avoir la même réponse d'ampli saturé en se branchant sur n'importe quel ampli clean (ou en retour de sa boucle d'effet si possible).
C'est fou d'avoir autant de fonctionnalités dans un boîtier plus petit que la majorité des pédales !

Le son avec ses qualités et ses défauts:

Les deux gains Pre et Power simulent bien ceux d'un ampli à lampe, et on obtient un bon contrôle du son de clean à saturer avec le volume de la guitare. Cela fonctionne encore mieux avec une pédale de compression ou un boost juste avant le Simplifier, et placer un égaliseur dans la boucle d'effet permet de vraiment sculpter le son (l'égaliseur trois-bandes du Simplifier fonctionne mais n'est pas assez polyvalent, il laisse à désirer).

La réponse au volume de jeu d'un ampli à lampe est donc bien simulée et c'est très agréable à jouer, mais pour ce qui est du son il y a une chose que le Simplifier ne peut pas reproduire: le contenu harmonique du son d'un ampli à lampe. Je peux obtenir la même dynamique en terme de quand le Simplifier sature par rapport à mon jeu, mais un vrai ampli à lampes amplifierait les harmoniques différemment, ce qui changerait vraiment le son des notes.
Tant qu'on ne compare pas, ce n'est pas gênant et je me laisse gagner par la réponse dynamique ... sauf quand j'utilise une Fuzz. Là, la pédale n'est pas du tout amplifiée comme sur un ampli à lampes, c'est vraiment un son différent et assez dur à maîtriser. C'est vraiment le seul point négatif pour moi.

Conclusion:

Pour moi ça reste le meilleur "ampli" à transistor vu le poids et la DI intégrée avec simulation analogique de cabinet ! Il est vraiment fait pour imiter la réponse d'un ampli à lampe par rapport au volume qu'on lui envoie, et c'est très agréable à jouer. Mais il reste fait de transistors et ne peut pas simuler la réponse fréquentielle des lampes, pour cela une simulation numérique est malheureusement le mieux.

I use this as my silent practice amp and modeller that gives me that Marshall tone while playing and recording guitar.

Simplifier mk 2 is permanently attached to my pedal board and is the last thing in the signal chain. Works wonderfully with other pedals, providing natural breakup / overdriven sound or cleans with some character.

I really like the first iteration but this mk2 has better adjustment ranges, layout and more amp like character.
