In order to be able to practice inside an apartment, I bought some of these Sound Off Dampers and some Low Volume Cymbals by Zildjan.
I did not like the feel of the Sound Off Dampers as they don't come as close to real feeling cymbal as the Low Volume Cymbals. The feel of your sticks bouncing on plastic is definitely not en enjoyable experience.
I bought the Evans sound off series for the entire drum set and while I am happy with all other dumpers this one for the hit-hat is the only one I do not recommend. Maybe it depends on the quality of the hit-hat itself, but this dumper makes the sound very ugly, unpleasant to play, no other way to say that. I suggest to experiment other solutions.
A thick piece of plastic, resistant, it lowers the volume but also kills totally the tone, somehow like if you practice directly over a piece of plastic and no hi hat sound at all, therefore, it does the job to allow you to practice with lower noise.
This really does the trick for quieter practice. Hi hat cymbals are especially tricky when it comes to keeping their volume down and this is the only damper that takes the bottom hat into consideration, thus making it the best one right now. If you still think it's considerably loud, i would recommend getting a second one for the bottom hat.
Thick and resistant, does the job to allow you to practice with lower noise. Found it had issues keeping in place on 1 of my pairs of hi-hats as they had wavy edges.
There are two ways for using this damper: horizontally or vertically oriented. If you beat on the gum you might have a slightly different stick bouncing (very similar to electronic drums). But if you still want to have same playing feeling of an acoustic hi-hat, it's better to turn the damper so that you play on the brass
I am so glad that these dampeners exist. I can play without disturbing my neighbours now. They do their job and well! Cymbals are really quiet. I am very happy and highly recommend these dampeners!
