A Good One

Much is made on the internet about Gibson's QC issues. I found no flaws with this guitar.

The finish is excellent. The Translucent Teal renders to a deep green over the mahogany body. You can't better a nitro cellulose finish.

The initial set up was good. My only quibble being that the stop bar was slammed to the body resulting in a sharper break angle than I'd be happy with long term. Easily adjustable though.

My biggest whinge - and it is very minor - is that Gibson seem to be cutting costs on the case candy - no bench photo and the included strap is a relatively cheap 2" PU leather one. Not a patch on the straps I've had with previous new Gibsons.

I can't really rate it for 'features' - it's a simple two volumes, two tone controls in the classic Gibson control layout - no coil tap or splits, no phase switching - but that's to be expected on a guitar catching the vibe of a 61 SG (Les Paul).

The neck is thin and works well with my relatively small hands. If you like a chunkier neck then there are other SG variants that may suit you better.

The 60's burst buckers are very articulate, picking up the nuances of playing well. They handle dynamic playing well. Whilst not the hottest humbuckers in the Gibson range, they can still push an amp nicely yet clean up well when the volume is rolled off.

Playability is good for me. The factory set up is good. The action & intonation were good straight from the case.

An SG with no neck dive! I couldn't ask for more.

Ich mag diese Gitarre sehr. Durch den glossy Nitrolack sieht man deutlich die schöne Magahoni Struktur von Body und Neck. Vom Look her mag ich das kleine Pickguard der 61er SG mehr als das grosse Batwing Pickguard der SG Standard. Die Trapezinlays und die Logo Decals am Headstock schimmern wunderbar je nach Lichteinfall. Die Gitarre ist sehr schön verarbeitet. Die Bünde sind ab Werk perfekt bearbeitet. Hier hilft sicher auch das Cream Binding entlang des Halses. Das Holz des Griffbretts ist etwas dunkler als bei meinen anderen SGs. Das Setup ab Fabrik ist sehr gut eingestellt. Der dünne Slim Taper Neck liegt sehr gut in der Hand. Von der viel zitierten Kopflastigkeit merke ich nichts. Allerdings verwende ich bei allen meinen Gitarren hochwertige Straps. Ich könnte mir vorstellen, dass das Phänomen des Neck Dive vorwiegend mit billigen Nylonstraps auftritt. Aber wenn man sich schon ein so tolles Instrument gönnt, muss auch ein hochwertiger Riemen drin liegen. Die Potis lassen sich gut bewegen und reagieren sehr gut. Ich habe die Gitarre ausgiebig sowohl über einen Amp-Simulator als auch über einen richtigen Amp gespielt. Die Nuancen der Poti-Einstellungen sind deutlich hörbar. Wie erwartet hat das Hals Pickup einen wunderbar warmen und eher tieferen Klang, während das Steg Pickup deutlich mehr Biss und Höhen hat. Alles in allem lässt sich sagen, dass die SG toll aussieht, durch das niedrige Gewicht und den bequemen Upper Fret Access einfach und angenehm zu spielen ist und sie klingt toll. Das ist bestimmt nicht meine letzte 61er SG und ich kann das Instrument sehr empfehlen.

Die Gitarre ist top, vor allem aber die Farbe. Was anderes, aber trotzdem irgendwie original, als wäre sie so 1961 rausgekommen.
Wer sagt, SGs nicht zu mögen, behaupte ich, hat noch keine gespielt. Vor allem als Strat Spieler eine der Top Gibson Gitarren, die nicht all zu ungewohnt ist.

Gibson's Qualitätsprobleme sind nach wie vor präsent, so hat es 3 Versuche gedauert, bis eine nahezu fehlerfreie SG ankam. Dank dem tollen Thomann Service war das Abenteuer nur halb so wild. Insbesondere die kostenlose technische Überprüfung, die mir dann vor dem Versand angeboten wurde, schätze ich sehr. Die Gitarre ging dabei wohl noch ein zweites mal in die Plek-Maschine, um wirklich perfekt zu sein. So ist es auch.

just a great instrument, but no QC

I got this guitar to "replace" my 335 on jams and venues that play loud but the sound is not great, i had feedback issues live when there is no sound engineer ... The SG is a great instrument, overall well balanced, super light, fast neck (surprisingly flat-ish at the 12th fret), the tone is awesome and versatile, you can get a lot done by just fiddling with the guitar controls... add some pedals and the sky's the limit.
The colour is really classy.

Gibson, that QC... seriously?!
these are minor things, but for high end instruments it's a shame. The cavities were all full of dry buffing compound, the fretboard was rough and full of small tool marks, the strings were dead, the nut was varnished with the guitar (literally), and the neck... i could have shot arrows with a bow like that.
Its took me about 3h of love to get this baby clean, and set up. Nothing that affects the instrument itself, but the average consumer isn't expecting to have a luthier bill on top of buying a new guitar.
