I've always been sceptical towards column array systems and I've heard all of them - from HK, EV, FBT, db, RCF and I've always thought they all lack midrange and that most of them sound aggressive.
But after 20+ years of carrying massive subs and tops I've decided to bite the bullet and get myself a column array for smaller to mid-sized gigs, to spare my back and time.
First of all - this system is made entirely of wood. A big plus in the very beginning. I've heard lots of these systems with plastic subwoofer cabinets like RCF J8 and that's something that I just can't swallow - that plasticky bass sound. Plastic tops like the one on db es602 I can tolerate, but the sub cabinet must be made of wood. In this segment the db es1002 rocks. Double 12-inch subs inside the cabinet shake the room to about 50 hz, not below. I did need some time to adjust myself to this mid-bass sound because I'm used to 15 and 18-inch sub sound with the bass frequencies going below 40 hz, but double sub inside gets the job done thanks to the powerful bi-amp.
This system is practically the db es-1602 with 2 amps. Es-1602 has three amps with the third made exclusively for splitting tops into stereo mode.
Es-1002 is a mono system, tops cannot be divided into 2 pieces and I really don't see that need for a mobile dj. On the other hand, I can totally understand why that option is convenient and great for live musicians.
Sound is really powerful and clear without being aggressive. You can hear the midrange properly and that is something that is really rare with these systems. The highs are clear even in the loudest volume and don't sound too harsh. I found the master level set at 3 o'clock to be optimal for best performance and power and it's really hard to push them into clipping. I even managed to cover some large wedding halls (corporate events) with a pair of them, although I would recommend to include at least one 18-inch sub for that purpose because of a longer throw that 18-inch subs provide.
They have a dsp like all db column array systems, but I always keep them on 'flat' because it sounds the best in that setting.
Handling is on a bit difficult side. 35 kg sub that's also very tall makes it pretty difficult to carry around so I suggest getting a small trolley for easier maneuvering.
The whole system arrives with quality, thick covers with pockets for handles on the sides and on the top, a great accessory.
I'm really satisfied with this db system and I recommend it to everyone for small to medium-sized gigs. Column arrays with poles, not spacers are much more practical and convenient because you can rotate the top without rotating the sub and I honestly cannot understand that even RCF went the spacer route this year with Evox J9 & J11.
If you're looking for a powerful, nice looking & great sounding monoo column system with a small footprint that won't brake your bank - look no further. Db es-1002 is the way to go, a system that doesn't get as much praise as it deserves, probably because of more popular es-1602, but it's the same system for 500 euros less, only mono, best choice for mobile djs.
